New Course: Creating Compelling Environments for Concept Art

In our latest course, you will learn how to develop a compelling environment for games or film. You will learn the core principles of sketching, lighting, composition, color and design. At the end of this course, you will have learned the foundation of how to create your own compelling environments for concept art.

What You’ll Learn

Concept artist Kalen Chock will take you through the full process of creating a beautiful game or film environment.

This course builds upon Kalen’s other course, Thumbnail Sketching for Environments, in which you expressed your environment ideas through thumbnail sketching. This time you’ll take one of those sketches and build it into a full environment by refining the line art, blocking in colours, adding texture, and much more.

New Coffee Break Course on CC Libraries in Adobe Photoshop

We know that many of our subscribers are busy people and have limited time available for online learning. So recently we created a new type of video content, called the “Coffee Break Course”, that’s designed to be consumed in a single sitting.

These new courses contain just a single video, about 7 to 12 minutes long, and by the end of the video you can expect to have mastered a new skill or concept.

The latest one, for example, is on Getting to Know the CC Libraries in Adobe Photoshop. The Adobe CC Library panel allows you to store color swatches, color themes, brushes, typographical styles and raster and vector graphics in the cloud for you to access at any time and from wherever you are!

In this Coffee Break Course, Envato Tuts+ instructor Kirk Nelson will show you how to use the CC libraries for a more streamlined workflow.

By the way, here’s a link to the Coffee Shop Facebook Timeline used in the course.

For those of you who prefer our traditional, longer courses, don’t worry: we’ve still got plenty of those coming your way. The Coffee Break Courses are just an alternative option for those of you who have less time available and want to master a new skill in a single sitting.

The CC Libraries course is free, but only for the first two weeks, so you need to act fast. Simply go to the course page before 29 December, and follow the steps to create a free account.

How to Digitize Hand-Crafted Textures

High-quality textures are an integral part of creating digital artwork with depth, realism and visual interest. One of the best ways of creating good textures is to develop them yourself.

But once you’ve created a hand-crafted texture, how do you best digitize it? In this short video tutorial from my recent course on texture crafting in Adobe Photoshop, I’ll show you the best way to scan your textures for later digital use. We’ll discuss the software to use, scanner settings, and more.

Note that this is only for textures that can safely and easily be placed onto a scanner bed.

Watch the Tutorial

Watch the Full Course

In the full course, Texture Crafting in Adobe Photoshop, I’ll take you step by step through the process of creating your own textures. We’ll look at photographing textures out in the “wild” or in a studio setting, crafting your own textures with real media, and creating digital textures with the tools in Photoshop.

This course will spark your interest in texture crafting and start you on your way to creating your own library of digital textures.

Photoshop in 60 Seconds: Getting a Grip on the Pen Tool

New Course: Building Your Own Actions in Adobe Photoshop

If you have used Photoshop for any extensive creative projects, you know that there are certain steps that you tend to do over and over again. This can be a tedious and time-consuming process, so what if you could train Photoshop to do it all for you?

Well, you can! Actions let you record the steps you take in Photoshop so that you can perform them again at the press of a button. Our new course, Building Your Own Actions in Adobe Photoshop, gives you a comprehensive look at creating and using Actions to speed up your workflow.

What You’ll Learn

Once you finish this course, you will know how to create Actions yourself. With Envato Tuts+ instructor Kirk Nelson, you’ll start with the very basics of recording Actions. You will take a look at the Actions panel, and discuss what types of Photoshop features can and cannot be used in Actions.

Then you will dig into some more advanced techniques like conditional statements and what to do when a particular tool or feature doesn’t record. You’ll finish by creating an intricate Star Dust effect that is completely automated.

This course is intended for intermediate users of Photoshop who already know how to use the program and are familiar with its major features and interface.

Ready to Learn Some Advanced Photoshop Techniques?

Are you looking to take your Adobe Photoshop skills up a notch? Do you struggle with translating your vision to the digital canvas? Our Advanced Adobe Photoshop Techniques course is designed to help!

What You’ll Learn

In 18 detailed videos from Tuts+ instructor Kirk Nelson, you’ll explore advanced Photoshop techniques used by the world’s leading digital artists and see how you can use those same techniques to increase the quality of your digital artwork.

This can be a huge time saver. In this lesson you will explore the applications of this technology that feels more like magic than science!

Actions

Actions allow you to create your own automated processes in Photoshop. This is a powerful means of speeding up tedious or repetitive tasks in the program. In this lesson you’ll learn how to record, test, and use a Photoshop Action.

Final Touches

This video from the end of the course will give you an idea of how the final product looks, and some of the finishing touches you’ll be applying to give the scene a final, polished look.
